"This is our most desperate hour."

It must be a very desperate hour indeed if she’s depending on the U.S. Postal Service to deliver the Death Star plans.

Thanks to Chelsea Hostetter for giving me the R2-D2 mailbox. How cool is that?

Origin

Chelsea Hostetter brought the R2-D2 mailbox back from Japan and was nice enough to give it to me. This mailbox is actually a coin bank sold by Japan’s postal service. It is part of a set of ten small plastic mailboxes from all over the world.

I came up with the idea for this photo shortly after receiving the R2-D2 mailbox, but I had to wait to acquire the Princess Leia figure before shooting it.

Setup

The setup for this photo was pretty simple.

The backdrop is a sheet of black foam board. The figures are standing on a clear sheet of acrylic, which is resting atop an old black shelf that I often use for tabletop photography.

I used a small LED flashlight (seen near the Leia figure in the setup photo) to backlight R2-D2. I simply shined the flashlight on the foam board behind him.

Above the scene is the large circular diffuser that I typically use. I draped a strip of cloth over part of the diffuser to darken the backdrop a bit.

R2-D2

R2-D2 is an astromech droid and a major character in the Star Wars universe. He was often paired with the protocol droid C-3PO and many adventures with Anakin Skywalker, Luke Skywalker, Princess Leia, and Obi-Wan Kenobi. He was portrayed by Kenny Baker and is only one of four characters to appear in all six Star Wars films. During the course of the prequel trilogy he saves everyone aboard Queen Amidala’s ship, witnesses the secret wedding of Akakin Skywalker and Padme Amidala, and helps rescue Chanellor Palpatine. In the original trilogy, R2-D2 carries the plans to the Death Star, aids the rebels in their escape from the Cloud City, and helps Luke Skywalker in rescuing Han Solo from Jabba the Hutt.
