As has been the case for many years, in 2010 my family’s Christmas tree was protected by superheroes. Shown here are Batman, Superman, Wonder Woman, Green Lantern, and the Flash.

Batman is a superhero appearing in comic books published by DC Comics. He was created by Bob Kane and Bill Finger and first appeared in Detective Comics #27 (1939). The rich industrial, playboy, and philanthropist Bruce Wayne, having watched his parents murdered as a child, swore to protect Gotham City from criminals by honing his physical and mental skills to the peak of human perfection. The Dark Knight’s costume varies but typically includes a cowl with bat-like ears, a scalloped cape, a utility belt, and a stylized bat emblem on the chest. He is often depicted as part of the Justice League superhero team along with Superman, Wonder Woman, Green Lantern, The Flash, and others. The character was played by Adam West in the television series Batman (1966), voiced by Kevin Conroy in Batman: The Animated Series (1992), and played by Christian Bale in a series of films directed by Christopher Nolan starting with Batman Begins (2005).
Green Lantern is the name given to numerous superheroes in comic books published by DC Comics. Alan Scott, the first Green Lantern, was created by Bill Finger and Martin Nodell and premiered in All-American Comics #16 in 1940. Each Green Lantern is armed with a power ring that projects solid-light constructs limited only by the wearer’s imagination and willpower. Except for Alan Scott, Green Lanterns are specially selected members of the Green Lantern Corps, an intergalactic police force. Notable Green Lanterns of Earth include Hal Jordan, John Stewart, Guy Gardner, and Kyle Rayner. Throughout their history Green Lanterns have often been members of the various incarnations of the Justice Society and Justice League with fellow superheroes such as Superman, Batman, Wonder Woman, The Flash, and others. The Green Lanterns have appeared in numerous TV series, including Green Lantern: The Animated Series (2011), and the film Green Lantern (2011).
Superman is a superhero in comic books published by DC Comics. He was created by Jerry Siegel and Joe Shuster and first appeared in Action Comics #1 (1938). Rocketed to Earth from the doomed planet Krypton, the baby Kal-El was raised in Smallville as Clark Kent. As he grew to maturity, he found himself possessed of amazing physical powers: faster than a speeding bullet, more powerful than a locomotive, and able to leap tall buildings in a single bound. To use his abilities in a never-ending battle for truth and justice as "Superman," he travelled to Metropolis and assumed the disguise of a mild-mannered reporter for The Daily Planet, a great metropolitan newspaper. His costume is red and blue with a cape and a distinctive "S" shield on his chest. He is often depicted as part of the Justice League superhero team along with Batman, Wonder Woman, Green Lantern, The Flash, and others. Superman was played by Christopher Reeve in a series of films beginning with Superman: The Movie (1978) and by Tom Welling in the television series Smallville (2001).
The Flash is the name given to several superheroes in comic books published by DC Comics. Jay Garrick, the first Flash, was created by Gardner Fox and Harry Lampert and premiered in Flash Comics #1 (1940). Each Flash has the benefits of super-speed in some form, including the ability to run very fast and extraordinarily quick reflexes. Although the role has been filled by many people the four most notable include Jay Garrick, Barry Allen, Wally West, and Bart Allen. The Flash costumes have varied but generally feature a lightning bolt on a field of red. Throughout their history Flashes have often been members of the various incarnations of the Justice Society and Justice League with fellow superheroes such as Superman, Batman, Wonder Woman, Green Lantern, and others. The Flash has appeared in numerous TV series, including The Flash (1990) and Young Justice (2010).
Wonder Woman is a superhero in comic books published by DC Comics. She was created by William Moulton Marston and premiered in All Star Comics #8 (1941). Diana was a warrior princess who came from an island of Amazons to the United States and become a superhero. Wonder Woman is armed with indestructible bracelets, the Lasso of Truth, and at times a sword. Her costume has varied but is typically red, white, and blue and includes a tiara, breastplate, and belt. She is often depicted as part of the Justice League superhero team along with Superman, Batman, Green Lantern, The Flash, and others. Wonder Woman has been seen in many television series including Wonder Woman (1975) in which she was played by Lynda Carter.
